You may think that a cover letter is not necessary, however, it is! The only time you might not need a cover letter is if you’re applying to a position online as some applicant tracking systems don’t allow candidates to submit them.

Always date your letter, address it to the Hiring Manager or Recruiter (list their name if you know it)

Your cover letter should be laid out in three paragraphs.

1st paragraph – Refer to the position that you are applying for mentioning the years of experience you can bring to the table. If someone referred you to the role, you can mention that in this paragraph as well.

2nd paragraph – List your most relevant experience that relates to the role you are applying for.

3rd paragraph – Explain how your experience and skills will translate to the success of role you are applying for. Thank the reader for taking the time to consider you for the role.

Introducing Yourself in an Email:

  1. Write a compelling subject line which persuades your recipient to open your email
  2. Tailor your greeting to the industry and situation (Dear…. or Hi…..)
  3. Explain why you’re reaching out. The key is making your explanation as relevant to the role you are applying for
  4. Provide value for them
  5. Include a call-to-action
  6. Say “thanks” and sign off
  7. Follow up with them
